Council unanimously endorsed Greens Cr Rohan Leppert’s motion last week regarding heritage controls in the Bourke Hill Precinct of the CBD.

The motion commissioned the scoping and costing of a project to review the statements of significance, gradings and other controls over buildings in the area, with a view to consolidating the work into a draft planning scheme amendment to be put to Council in 2014.

The successful motion is also reported by The Age:

Whilst the recently endorsed City of Melbourne Heritage Strategy includes an action to ‘Progressively undertake a review of previously identified heritage places and precincts, focusing on the city’s areas where change is most likely’, the Strategy doesn’t include timeframes for the implementation of its actions.

To get this process started, the Council has supported the Greens’ call to begin in the area of the City subject to the most intense pressure from development.
