Campaign finance

The Greens are committed to transparent, accurate and timely disclosure of campaign donations. We also never take donations from property developers, and advocate a ban on such donations to all politicians and candidates.

The Local Government Act and Regulations require candidates to complete an election campaign donation return within 40 days of election day, disclosing the size and origin of all donations of $500 or more. This means that voters do not know where campaign teams’ donations are coming from until well after they have voted. We believe that this system is broken.

The Greens have committed to voluntarily disclosing all reportable campaign donations on October 3, October 17* and November 14**, and to provide The Age with copies of disclosure statements on those dates. (Postal voting opened 4 October and closed 21 October.)

*Was October 14, but The Age requested a delay to October 17.

**Was November 11, but The Age requested a delay to November 14.
